LINKS RELATED TO DISPOSAL OF TREES KILLED BY BEETLES (PEST)

SELECTED WEB LINKS

Included in this special section are selected  links that relate to the disposal of trees killed by pests and fungi, such as the Mountain Pine Beetle, Emerald Ashborer, Longhorned Beetle or the fungus that causes SOD.

There are some misunderstandings regarding the issue of best disposal practices for live or dead trees that are infested with beetles.  Scientific data is scarce and anecdotal advice is frequently erroneous, often devoid of facts and lacking common sense.

 Air Curtain Burner (ACB)

Climbing Life, 2008
Mountain pine beetle infestation in pine trees in the Estes Valley has been nominal this past season, though a number of trees were attacked and killed. Those fighting the infestation thank the Town board for providing the air curtain burner to dispose of beetle-infested logs from Estes Valley residents

"The Regional District of the Central Okanagan has found a better way to dispose of beetle infested trees and wood debris from regional parks.

The Regional District Board will apply to the Union of B.C. Municipalities for funding to purchase an air curtain burner..."

Estes Park Trail Gazette, Colorado: "Battle hot spots - Air curtain burner has incinerated close to 150 cubic yards of beetle-killed trees", 2008

"Burning the tree trunks was seen as a cost-effective alternative to the previous method of grinding the dead trees into mulch and transporting it to the Larimer County Landfill."

“This is a more affordable solution as the problem grows larger,” said Zurn at the April Town board meeting when he made the request to purchase the burner. “The process of grinding, hauling and disposing of tree material after grinding will soon become cost prohibitive. The staff feels that the air curtain would pay for itself within the first two or three years.”
